Veena Studio

DAW Elements & WebAudio

Overview

A web and desktop Digital Audio Workstation bringing professional-grade audio production to the browser with zero compromises on performance.

Role

Product Manager (Founder's Office)

Timeline

1 Year

01. The Problem

Browser-based digital audio workstations (DAWs) traditionally suffered from unacceptable latency and clunky interfaces that frustrated professional musicians.

02. Research & Insights

Interviewed 40+ music producers ranging from bedroom beatmakers to studio engineers. Analyzed the workflows of industry standards like Ableton Live and Logic Pro.

Key User Insights

  • 01.Cloud collaboration is highly desired, but not at the expense of the zero-latency feel of native desktop apps.
  • 02.Keyboard shortcuts are not optional; they are the primary mode of navigation.
  • 03.Visual feedback for audio levels must run at 60fps, or the software feels 'cheap'.

03. Strategy & Design

Core Strategy

Build a high-performance audio engine utilizing the Web Audio API and WebAssembly, wrapped in an interface that perfectly mimics the density and precision of desktop software.

Design Process

Developed a complex, dark-mode design system with sub-pixel precision for the timeline, track headers, and plugin interfaces. Emphasized horizontal scrolling and zoom mechanics.

04. Execution & Challenges

Implementation

Implemented advanced Web Audio pipelines. Wrote comprehensive user stories and acceptance criteria for collaborative marketplace systems.

The Challenge

"React's render cycle is too slow for audio-critical UI updates (like playheads and level meters). We had to build custom event emitters that bypassed React state entirely."

Learnings

Complex web applications require a completely different approach to state management than traditional CRUD apps. You must respect the main thread and offload heavy computation to Web Workers.

05. Outcomes

Reduced audio processing latency by 35% compared to previous iterations.

Generated 1,200+ waitlist signups within 30 days of the GTM launch.

Improved 7-day retention by 28% through onboarding optimization.
